    Meet the Maker: Nick Rossi

These events are an opportunity for our community to come together and learn more about our craft, our forge and the people who bring it to life.

    On this evening, we invite you to join us in welcoming Nick Rossi as he shares his unique and exquisite work in an hour long talk and visual feast, followed by a question-and-answer period.  This event is a prelude to his four-day Hunter Knife class that will begin the following morning in Adam’s Forge.

    Based in Maine, Nick is a certified Master Bladesmith in the American Bladesmith Society, a member of the Maine Craft Guild, the Maine Craft Association, the Portland based Metals Collective and a member of the New England Bladesmith Guild. Nick teaches workshops and gives demonstrations all over the country.

    This is an opportunity to gain first-hand understanding of some of the joys and challenges involved in professional smithing from a very accessible master.

    This promises to be a night to remember, full of inspiration and possibilities.

    Doors will open at 7:00pm and the talk will begin at 7:30pm.

    Discovery Chopsticks Class

    Date: February 14, 2023 Time: 6 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Valentine's Day!  Bring your sweetheart and make some magic in the forge! Here's our newest Discovery class and one for those more experienced students who want to build on their skills too.  While this project is a simple one, it’s also one that invites improvisation and experimentation.  Using 1/4”  mild steel bar, our instructor will demonstrate tapering the stock while checking as you go to create a tool that balances in your hand while in use. They’ll show several different design options, from various twists to different punches you can use for texture as well as different types of finials.  Then you’ll move on to the little chopstick rests.  Here, you can really let your imagination lead the way!  From traditionally simple and elegant shapes to wild and whacky and everything in between, you’ll be free to create your own custom set, or maybe more if you’re swift. These also make great hair pins and gifts too! Prerequisite: None.  This is an introductory class.  The class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced smiths. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Open Forge

    Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class and Adam's Forge Membership  Can't add this class to your cart? You can join the Membership Program here   Date: February 21, 2023 Time: 6 pm - 10 pm Location: Adam's Forge Not a class, but a swell time to get in the forge to do what you wanna do. You can bring your own material and work on your own project. This can be a chance to finish that piece you started or work out a technique you’ve been meaning to try. One of our intrepid instructors will be on hand working on their own thing. Please note: these sessions are intended to support our students as they practice skills that are within their ability range.  Please do not use our forge and tools to experiment with new techniques that are beyond your skill level.  When in doubt, ask the instructor. As with all of our classes, we require that students attending Open Forge sessions be at least 12 years old. A student who is not an adult (18 and older) will need to have a parent or guardian present at ALL times during the session. Thanks for thinking of safety first. Bring your own steel OR we have steel for sale at the forge: 1/4" square 3/8" square and round 1/2" square and round Sold by the foot sucker rod (higher carbon steel) sold in 7" sections You must have taken at least one Discovery class from us and be familiar with working safely.

    Private Letter Opener Discovery Class

    Prerequisite: None. This is an introductory class Date:April 12, 2022 Time: 1 PM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge The Letter Opener is an introductory class as well as a great next step for students that have taken our Discovery class and want to continue to develop their blacksmithing skills. The Letter Opener class teaches techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects.  You'll learn how to work with slightly larger stock, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You'll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade, you'll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. Note: This class is a prerequisite to all blade classes.

    Private Tutorial

    Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: March 8, 2022 Time: 4 pm - 6 pm Location: Adam's Forge This is a private tutorial session for Srinath Samudrala.  We will focus on specific properties of high-carbon steel in relation to forging blades.  Hammer technique, blade shape and attention to forging temperatures will be emphasized.  This session is intended to give the student enough guidance to enable him to practice in Open Forge sessions with only minimal supervision.
