This is an introductory class Date:April 12, 2022 Time: 1 PM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge The Letter Opener is an introductory class as well as a great next step for students that have taken our Discovery class and want to continue to develop their blacksmithing skills. The Letter Opener class teaches techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects.  You'll learn how to work with slightly larger stock, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You'll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade, you'll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. Note: This class is a prerequisite to all blade classes.

    Repoussé & Chasing

      Date: June 25 and 26, 2022 Time: 10 PM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge Please note: This class takes place both Saturday and Sunday. Session 1: 6-25-22 from 10:00pm - 4:00pm Session 2: 6-26-22 from 10:00pm - 4:00pm Students must attend both sessions. Experience transforming flat sheet metal into three dimensional sculpture using the techniques of repoussé and chasing. These techniques have been used for centuries in many cultures to express the ideas of makers, from jewelry, sword fittings and armor to the Statue of Liberty!   Students are encouraged to design their image and get input from the instructor beforehand. Your sketch should fit inside a 3 or 4 inch square.  Designs may be representational or abstract. We will start with an explanation of the various approaches and talk about design. After a bit of demonstration each student will design and execute their work in sheet copper. We will use pitch in part of the process. There are so many options, come try it for yourself! The fee for the class includes copper sheet. Pitch, pitch bowls and tooling will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring any tooling of their own (such as chasing hammers) but it is not necessary. Heat sources such as heat guns and plumber’s torches will be shared. If you have a heat gun, please bring it. Fee: $395

    Date: June 9, 2022 Time: 6 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, you’ll use some basic forging techniques to sculpt something both creative and useful.  Using bar stock, a guillotine tool, hammer and fullers, you'll craft some unique wall hooks.  Using some of our hand forged custom punches, you’ll be able to create character and features to give it real cattitude! Skills used in this project include: Tapering Forging on the horn of the anvil to create curves in the tail Hot punching with several different punches Using a guillotine tool to create the neck This is a good class for beginners and makes a great present! Prerequisite: any Discovery or letter opener class.
