    Letter Opener

    Prerequisite: None. This is an introductory class Date: October 30, 2021 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge The Letter Opener is an introductory class as well as a great next step for students that have taken our Discovery class and want to continue to develop their blacksmithing skills. The Letter Opener class teaches techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects.  You'll learn how to work with slightly larger stock, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You'll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade, you'll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. The class runs from 9 am to 3 pm with a break for lunch.

    Penannular Pin

    Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: October 26, 2021 Time: 4 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Amanda Kazarian Having trouble keeping your superhero cape fastened? This class is for you! The penannular has been made for millennia in many cultures to fasten clothing. The Vikings made them, the Celts popularized them. This class is a perfect next step after Discovery Class. Amanda will teach you how to make a basic pin and suggest some design variations. The techniques used in making penannulars can be applied to many advanced projects. Come learn in the fun class!  ps: Penannulars make great gifts! Skills learned: Tapers, twisting, bending over the horn, and finishing. This class runs from 4 PM-10 PM, with a half-hour meal break.

    Skull Necklace

    Date: October 31, 2021 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Prerequisite: Discovery class or Letter Opener class Halloween is here and Dia De Los Muertos is nipping at its heels. Best be properly attired! On this day, Adam's Forge instructor Gary Standke will take you down a dark and winding path into the heart of the forge where you will make iron skulls and create a necklace, amulet, talisman or just plain scary thingy.  We will go over tooling required, shaping the iron, using custom made punches and fullers for the facial features, options for giving it the look you want and finishing techniques.  Finally you'll create the string and hardware for the necklace. You'll practice the technical skills of tapering, hot cutting, slitting, punching, grinding and necklace fabrication.  At the same time, you'll also be sculpting hot metal and assessing your progress as you work. This class runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00PM with a break for lunch.
