    Railroad Spike Tomahawk

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Discovery Class Date: September 10, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, Adam's Forge instructor John Drayer will lead students in making a tomahawk out of a railroad spike. Yes, this class is indeed as cool as it sounds. Yes, this class is challenging. First, John will teach students how to upset the railroad spike. What is upsetting? This is the process of thickening steel and moving mass to where you want the mass to go by isolating sections of the material with heat and banging on it with a hammer. Sound fun? You bet! The idea here is to create mass at the end of the railroad spike by upsetting it into itself so that there is enough material to make the tomahawk blade. This is a really great technique and useful for lots of projects where you may need to create mass. Next, John will teach students to punch the railroad spike using a hand held slot punch to create the opening for the eye for the tomahawk. Have you ever thought about how to create a hole without losing mass? This is one of the most useful blacksmith skills! Punching a hole moves mass to the side, and practically no material is wasted. With a nicely punched hole, students will next move on to forging the tomahawk blade using the peen of their hammers. John will be discussing how to alternate between using the peen and flat face of your hammer to control where the metal will go and in what direction. Lastly, John will show students how use a mouse hawk drift to drift open the eye to the size required for the handle, how to file the edge, and how to attach the handle. Please note that this class is not appropriate for the beginning student! Students should have solid blacksmithing skills before signing up for this class. This class is appropriate for the intermediate smith comfortable working with larger size stock and hand tools. We request that students have taken at least 3-5 project classes or workshops with us or have taken the CBA program in the past or are currently enrolled in our Tools and Techniques classes to be eligible for this class. Please do not sign up for this class if you have just taken Discovery! Take some other classes first, and then come back for this one when you have more experience. If you are not sure about your experience level, contact us and we'll help figure out if this class is for you. This class runs from 9 AM - 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch.

    Forge Welded Woven Bracelet

    $150.00
Date: August 14, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 1 PM Location: Adam's Forge Are you ready to forge weld?  Up until modern times, this skill was a closely guarded secret.  In this class, you’ll take a single round bar and using some clever hot folding and forge welding, create a three-piece bracelet.  Adam’s Forge instructor Amanda Kazarian will demonstrate the forge welding, twisting and forming of the open basket weave and finally show you how to form it into a beautiful bracelet that you can custom fit to your liking. The skills learned in this class will easily translate to a wide variety of other items and uses. From hardware to handles to pure ornamentation, this basket weave is a classic design element you’ll want to have in your repertoire. This class is most appropriate for the advancing smith with an interest in building skills and technique. While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken several project classes or workshops with us and/or spent time in Open Forge before starting this project are more successful and get more out of this class.  All students must have taken a Discovery class with us.

    Kiridashi

    $200.00
Date: September 4, 2022 Time: 2 PM - 9 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Dossain Valencia

Here, you’ll practice precision forging, learn some of the important considerations in blade design and have a chance to try different texturing methods.  This blade is made from tool steel, so you’ll be heat treating, grinding, polishing and hand sharpening as well.

    Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery Class

This class runs from 2:00pm – 9:00pm with an hour meal break.

    Discovery Class

    $140.00
Prerequisite: None. This is the first class to take. Date: September 17, 2022 Time: 2 PM  - 6 PM Location: Adam's Forge Start Smithing! The Ancient DIY Craft. Not sure what blacksmithing is or if you’re really interested? This class is for you! Come watch a demonstration and then give it a try in the forge with the help of one of our intrepid instructors. The pre-industrial art of blacksmithing has existed since the ancient times - copper making at high-temperature dates as far back as 5,000 BCE! Projects are simple and will give you a taste of what hot forging is about. In this 4 hour class you'll get an introduction to our forge and tools, learn how to work safely, and learn the fundamental techniques of blacksmithing. And you'll come home with a useful item that you forged on your own! Come discover blacksmithing for yourself! SAFETY NOTES: Metalworking involves a certain amount of inherent risk. Many of the tools and techniques used at Adam’s Forge are capable of causing injury. Tools can burn, cut, and abrade. These are merely examples and not a complete list of dangers. If we are all aware and use safe practices we can minimize those dangers, hence the need for a safety policy. Each smith is responsible for their own safety as well as the safety of others nearby. Participants must have instructor clearance before they use any tool. The minimum age to register for this class is 12 years old. All students between the ages of 12 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult while at the Forge. HYDRATION: If you’re not sweating you’re probably not doing it right. Please bring something non-alcoholic to drink. Water works perfectly! PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COTTON, WOOL, or LEATHER): Nonflammable material is REQUIRED at all times. Tee shirts and jeans are perfect. FOOTWEAR (LEATHER, COTTON): Nonflammable and with the toes covered to protect the feet from the constant production of hot and sharp metal fragments which rain down on the feet constantly is REQUIRED at all times. A steel toe is optional and provides protection against a dropped hammer or work piece. Boots, with the pants outside the boot top will prevent the hot and sharp metal fragments from getting in and burning your feet. Tools and equipment are provided without extra charge. Eye protection is mandatory. Please bring your own safety glasses, or we can provide a new unused pair at no additional cost. Gloves are optional. We recommend that you bring a pair in case you have trouble getting hot pieces in and out of the forge. If you decide you need a pair on the day of your class you can purchase them from Adam's Forge for $7.00.

    Ball pein hammer axe

    $180.00
Prerequisite: Discovery Class Date: September 24, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge

Why recycle when you can upcycle?  In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Gary Standke will teach you how to turn a humble hammer into a fully functional axe.

Starting with a 16 oz ballpein hammer, the ball end will be forged into a hammer and the other into an axe. You’ll learn how to heat treat and temper the steel and sharpen the edge.  Finally, you’ll reuse the handles which were on the hammers and fit them in the axe. Not only will you have a unique tool to bring home, but you’ll have learned a valuable skill that will enable you to modify inexpensive common tools into customized specialty tools.

Gary will have some 24oz hammers for those who want to make something larger.  But be forewarned; it’s a lot more metal to move!

This class runs from 9:00am – 3:00pm with an hour meal break.

Prerequisite: Any Discovery class, plus 2 or 3 project classes.  This class will require some stamina and determination, as you’ll be forging tool steel.
