    Iron Age Knife

    $190.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Suggested skill level: Beginner and up Date: March 30, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this workshop, Adam’s Forge instructor Dossain Valencia will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this workshop, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps! Please note: All workshops are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

Is there anything classier than a well forged bowie knife with a handmade sheath to complete the look? We offer you a one-day leather sheath introduction course to go along with your frontier belt knife or any other large bowie knife you may have! *read note below*. Now you can have a beautiful custom-made knife sheath and the skills to make more in the future as you progress in your bladesmithing journey. Leather working is an excellent way to expand your area of expertise and safely store your blades.

In this introductory leather sheath course we will be discussing sheath pattern making, basic leather stitching, basic rawhide construction, and  leather tooling. We will be demonstrating a two-piece leather and rawhide constructed sheath and finishing it in a rugged western style to suit most larger blade aesthetics. We provide all tools and materials for the workshop.

Important note: This class is offered as a follow up to the frontier belt knife, however students that did not take this class and want to take this introductory course must bring a knife that is at least over five inches and below 10 inches. Generally straight blades are also appropriate for this class as well.

Prior leather working knowledge is not needed and everyone is welcome.

Confident, accurate hammer blows are required to successfully use hot punches. Time: 9 AM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Mark Aspery

We are so excited to be able to offer this workshop with Mark Aspery, the man who wrote the book on blacksmithing. Literally. Actually, he wrote three books specifically for those learning blacksmithing.  You’ll learn how to squish hot steel around to create a sculptural bear head. These skills and tooling can be used to create many different animal and fantasy creatures. One of Mark’s superpowers is to help smiths understand how the material works and the design and use of tooling to accomplish the desired outcome.

We’ll be looking at design considerations, material choices, and tooling while demonstrating some of the tips and techniques involved in forging precise, realistic pieces.  Mark is a certified journeyman smith with the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, a United Kingdom guild founded in London in 1324. He is also a certified Farrier with the American Farriers Association.

This workshop runs from 9:00am – 5:00pm with an hour meal break.
