    Iron Age Knife

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Date: July 16, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Kent Lulewich will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this class, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps!
  • Prerequisite: None. This is an introductory class Date: July 23, 2022 Time: 4 PM - 8 PM Location: Adam's Forge The Letter Opener is an introductory class as well as a great next step for students that have taken our Discovery class and want to continue to develop their blacksmithing skills. The Letter Opener class teaches techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects.  You'll learn how to work with slightly larger stock, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You'll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade, you'll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener.

  •   Date: June 16, 23 and 30, 2022 Time: 4 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Please note: This class takes place over three separate Thursday evening classes. Session 1: 6-16-22 from 4:00pm - 10:00pm Session 2: 6-23-22 from 4:00pm - 10:00pm Session 3: 6-30-22 from 4:00pm - 10:00pm. Students must attend all sessions. In this class, you’ll build on the skills you developed in previous blade classes and learn to forge and finish a full tang utility knife.  Starting with 1084 tool steel, on day 1, we’ll cover blade design, forging techniques, heat treatment and grinding.  Our emphasis will be on precise forging with close attention to temperatures, thus ensuring the integrity of the steel and minimizing the amount of grinding needed.  After forging, we’ll rough-grind the blades and anneal them overnight. On day 2, we’ll drill the tangs, cut and rough out the hardwood scales for the handles, cut the pins that will secure the handles to the tang and do the finish blade grinding before putting them back in the oven for the hardening and tempering cycle. On day 3, we’ll focus on shaping the scales and the final fit-up with glue and pins.  We’ll finish the day with sanding and a discussion of sealing options. Successful students can expect to complete one 3 to 4 inch knife. Prerequisites: The Letter Opener Discovery and the Blacksmith’s Knife or equivalent.  Exceptions are subject to administrative approval.
Successful completion of this class is required to advance to the Bladesmithing II Program. Fee: $425
