Day 2: 2 pm – 6pmDay One: On the first day Dossain Valencia will be demonstrating three techniques. The first demo is an integral Bowie knife forging under the power hammer. The second demo will be a hidden tang style Bowie knife forging under the power hammer. The third demo will be how to forge a hot fitted bolster/finger guard compatible with the hidden tang knife The first day will be a demonstration heavy day, with time set aside for you and Liam to forge your blades and practice forging bolsters. This will be a six hour course with the focus being on forging larger blades from the damascus billets that were made prior to this class. We will be working on the power hammers as well as precision hand hammer work on the anvil to further refine the geometry and shape of our blades. Day two: On the second day Dossain will demonstrate grinding techniques that focus on preparation for heat treatment prior to final fit and finish. Straight grinds as well as half grind techniques will be explored for the purpose of grinding larger blades. There will be a demonstration on knife grinding, false edge grinding, jimping, use of contact wheels and file work related to blade embellishment and bolsters. This demonstration will cover an introductory exploration of embellishment and decorative work on the blades we have forged. The second day will be mostly grinding and hand file work demonstrations and time within the four hour session to complete your bowie knife grinds and talk about fit and finish with our bolster/finger guards. We have you scheduled for the 23rd and 24th of March for 6 hours on the 23rd (with a one hour break) and 4 hours on the 24th.
