    Leather Knife Sheath

    We offer you a one-day leather sheath introduction course to go along with your letter opener or any other smaller knife you may have! *read note below*. Now you can have a beautiful custom-made knife sheath and the skills to make more in the future as you progress in your bladesmithing journey. Leather working is an excellent way to expand your area of expertise and safely store your blades.

    In this introductory leather sheath course we will be discussing sheath pattern making, basic leather joinery and tooling. We will be demonstrating a one-piece leather sheath that you can finish and take home with pride.  We provide all tools and materials for the workshop.

    • Important note: If you have a knife that you'd like to design your sheath around, please bring it.  Knives with a blade length of 3 - 4 inches work for this project.

    Prior leather working knowledge is not needed and everyone is welcome.

    Botanical Forms

    Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: June 30, 2024 Time: 2 PM - 6 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class we will sculpt steel with hammer, fullers and anvil to forge organic leaf and plant forms. The leaf motif has always been used to add visual interest to forged pieces from architectural work to jewelry and everything in between. Once you learn these techniques you can add leaves to almost all your projects. In this class we will demonstrate a variety of different leaf and foliage forms. They  can be made to look very realistic or representational depending on your preference.  This is a fun class in which you will get to exercise your creative license and let your imagination run free. Here’s a list of some of the skills you will learn in this class... Forging short tapers Isolating material with half faced blows to forge the leaf pre-form Drawing out stem material and turning it from square to round Using the pein and/or fullers to spread metal directionally and suggest vein texture Fold forming Light upsetting and drastic spreading to create the ginkgo leaf This class is a great way to practice your hammer accuracy and learn how to pre-form the steel to create the shapes you want to materialize. Think of it as a class to learn and practice making leaves that will adorn your future projects.     Layered Pendant

    Adam’s Forge is delighted to partner with Metal Artist Chloe Kono aka Chloeography in offering a jewelry making workshop.  Chloe holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University Long Beach and has been creating metal art for over a decade.  Her aesthetic ranges from clever, humorous, and whimsical, to luminous heirloom pieces.
    In this workshop, you’ll design and create a layered pendant with simple sheet metal fabrication! Students will learn about the basic jewelry making hand tools, the nature of non-ferrous metals, and foundational techniques including sawing, texturing, riveting, and finishing.
    If you have a design that you’d like to make, it should be approximately between 1 and 2 inches overall.  Chloe will have designs on hand for you to try, or you can improvise on the day!
    Class fee includes raw materials and access to all tools and equipment needed to finish the project.
    Optional: Sterling Silver Sheet (3x3, 22g) is available for purchase if students would like an upgrade.

    Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery Class plus a Power Hammer Safety workshop & 2 or 3 project workshops or equivalent experience.

    Suggested skill level: Seasoned Beginner and up.  Participants should have solid blacksmithing skills and be confident using hand tools before moving to the power hammer.

    The railroad spike is one of the first knife projects every bladesmith makes; it's almost a rite of passage on your way to becoming a bladesmith. Step up your experience by signing up for our power hammer railroad spike class! You'll learn the safe operation of the power hammers at our facility, and also how to forge a well-made railroad spike knife with our knowledgeable instructors. Come down to Adam’s Forge to gain the skill and know-how to make your very own.

    In this class we'll discuss blade profiling under the power hammer, and we will walk through the basics of heat treatment and grinding to ensure that you walk out satisfied and proud of the blade you make with us. Bring your friends over for a good time and make some knives!

    Kiridashi

    The Kiridashi is the original Japanese utility knife that has historically been used by Samurai and peasants alike.  It’s both light and strong, suitable for a variety of uses.  If you’ve taken the Letter Opener Discovery class, this is a perfect follow up project to build your bladesmithing skills.

    Here, you’ll practice precision forging, learn some of the important considerations in blade design and have a chance to try different texturing methods.  This blade is made from tool steel, so you’ll be heat treating, grinding, polishing and hand sharpening as well.

    This class runs from 9:00am – 4:00pm with an hour meal break.
