    Leather Belt

    $150.00
Prerequisite: None. This is an introductory workshop Suggested skill level: Beginner and up Date: April 28, 2024 Time: 10 AM - 2 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Dossain Valencia

This workshop is a follow-up on the Belt Buckle workshop.   If you have a different buckle that you wish to use, bring it along, and even if you don’t have a buckle to use, you can still join the workshop and learn to craft a leather belt.  Starting with vegetable tanned leather, you’ll measure and cut out your belt to dimension.  If your belt buckle didn’t come out exactly to scale, no problem, you can custom cut the leather to suit.  Then our Lead Instructor Dossain Valencia will discuss design considerations and demonstrate how to use the swivel knife, hole punch and various stamping tools.  You’ll learn how to prepare the leather for stamping as well as use other tools to create your unique design.  Then, you’ll move on to the finishing, including dying the leather or using a natural oil finish if you wish, burnishing the edges and finally fitting the buckle to the finished belt.

    Iron Age Knife

    $190.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Suggested skill level: Beginner and up Date: May 5, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Dossain Valencia In this workshop, Adam’s Forge instructor Dossain Valencia will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this workshop, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps! Please note: All workshops are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

  • Date: May 12, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge

    Instructor: Gary Standke

Prerequisite: Discovery Letter Opener, Power Hammer Safety,  plus one or two project classes. Participants should have solid blacksmithing skills and be confident using hand tools before moving to the power hammer.

Skill Level: Seasoned beginner, Intermediate and Advanced

Join us to create a blacksmith knife with the assistance of the power hammer.  This is a high carbon steel knife made from 80CRV2 steel.  This is your chance to safely use the power hammers. The drawing out of the handle of this knife takes about 30 minutes of heavy hitting with a hammer on the anvil. With the power hammer, it's done in a few minutes with little physical exertion on your part.

We start this class by reviewing how to use the power hammer in a safe and effective manner.  While it can rapidly move metal with little effort on your part, it can also crush your project into a pretzel just as quickly.

Then it's time to start the knife by drawing out the steel on the power hammer creating the handle.  The 4-inch blade section is then forged on the anvil; the power hammer will not help us here. Getting the correct taper and choosing your knife’s point will be discussed and demonstrated.  Once all is forged and rough ground, hardening is done at the forge: heating the blade to the correct temperature and quenching in oil to harden the edge. Tempering the blade to improve the toughness comes next using an oven.  Then to the powered grinders to grind, polish, and hone the edge to your chosen sharpness.

While we will not have time in this class to make a sheath, we’ll be following up with leather sheath workshops in the very near future, so keep your eyes open for that.  You will leave with a complete knife, ready to use.

Tools: Students do not need to bring tools; we have everything that you will need. However, if you happen to have the following, please bring them so that you have the opportunity to use your own!

Coarse files (i.e. 12-inch Heavy Duty Set from Harbor Freight)

    Tongs for ¼” x ¾” stock

Class starts at 9 am and runs to 3 pm with an hour for lunch break.

Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Paring Knife

    $210.00
Date: May 19, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Kent Lulewich Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery Class Suggested Skill Level: Beginner and up

Join us to create a paring knife to use in the kitchen or take on your next picnic.   This is a high carbon steel knife made from 80CRV2 steel.

We start by creating the handle section that you can size to fit your hand perfectly. Then the blade is forged and heat-treated. Lastly, we will grind it to the level of sharpness you desire.

The handle will be cord wrapped for both comfort and durability. We will discuss other handle options you can try on your own.

While we will not have time in this class to make a sheath, we will show you examples so you can do this on your own.

You will leave with a complete knife, ready to use.

Tools: Students do not need to bring tools; we have everything that you will need. However, if you happen to have the following, please bring them so that you have the opportunity to use your own!

    Chasing and Repoussé

    $425.00
Date: May 18 & 19, 2024 Time: 10 AM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge This is an introductory class; no prerequisite is required. Suggested skill level: Beginner through advanced Please note: This class takes place both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am - 4:00pm Instructor: Heather McLarty Students must attend both sessions. These techniques have been used for centuries in many cultures to express the ideas of makers, from jewelry, sword fittings and armor to the Statue of Liberty!   Students are encouraged to design their image and get input from the instructor beforehand. Your sketch should fit inside a 3 or 4 inch square.  Designs may be representational or abstract. We will start with an explanation of the various approaches and talk about design. After a bit of demonstration each student will design and execute their work in sheet copper. We will use pitch in part of the process. There are so many options, come try it for yourself! The fee for the class includes copper sheet. Pitch, pitch bowls and tooling will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring any tooling of their own (such as chasing hammers) but it is not necessary. Heat sources such as heat guns and plumber’s torches will be shared. Honesuki Style Knife

    $600.00
Date: May 25, 26 & 27 2024 Time:  9AM - 5PM Location: Adam's Forge Skill Level: Seasoned Beginner Prerequisites: Letter Opener Discovery plus Introduction to Bladesmithing or 2-3 of our blade classes. Please note: This workshop takes place over three consecutive days. Each day starts at 9:00am and ends at 5:00pm with an hour meal break. Students must attend all sessions.

Fresh from Two Fish Cutlery comes Tom Pricone’s newest interpretation of a culinary classic, the Honesuki.  This Japanese boning knife is popular among chefs and home cooks thanks to its nimble geometry and very fine edge.  It’s also versatile enough to use for filleting fish, slicing meat, and dicing veggies.

At 6-3/4 inches, this is smaller than a chef’s knife, yet the perfect size and shape for most food prep.

In keeping with our overall approach to blade smithing, the emphasis in this workshop will be on forged to finish blades with minimal stock removal necessary. The impact of design choices on overall functionality, balance, wrist, and hand fatigue will also be explored.  From forging to heat treating, grinding, polishing, handle construction and fit-up, students will have clear instruction and expert assistance each step of the way.

Rugged, refined, respected.  This cutlery exemplifies functional, elegant beauty.  If you’re serious about making knives, this class is not to be missed!

Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!
