• Date: October 26, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are able to offer these CBA Level II skill-based workshops at a reduced price of $100. If you are interested in getting CBA Level certification and have not yet started, you can start with the Blacksmithing Fundamentals workshop. However, this is a great class for anyone interested in improving their skills. In this class, students will learn to make a scrolling wrench, also known as a "dog wrench" or bending fork. This is a specialized tool used to help forge scrolls and/or make or adjust controlled bends. If you haven't noticed yet, scrolls are everywhere in ironwork. And to make the perfect bend, you'll need to know how to make just the right tool! Did you ever want to just grab the iron and push, pull, or twist it to where you wanted to go? Naturally, with red-hot steel this can be difficult. What you need is a tool specifically designed to grab the material and control it from a distance.  In this class you will learn how to forge a scrolling wrench out of mild steel. First learning to isolate and move metal in the middle of the bar to create the lower jaw of the wrench using a fullering tool. Then you move on to forging the end of the bar to a specific dimension to create the 1/2" wrench.  You'll create an end treatment for a handle. In this tool you will forge an eye by drawing out and bending the end into a circle. This allows the tool to be hung from a nail. This is the same technique you would use to make an eye on the end of a spoon or ladle and also to forge an eye bolt. Lastly, you will learn to case harden the faces of the tool.  We give you the material to make a pair of them so you will be all set in your further forging adventures. With this tool you are able to move stock at the angle and in the direction you want. They are essential for making scrolls and fitting them into position. We also use them for adjusting the handles of tongs. You will get to try them out today, if you have time, making a ribbon scroll.   Gary will be teaching both the making of tongs and many other scrolls later this year. Prerequisites: Any Discovery Class and basic knowledge of blacksmithing. You should have taken one or two other tool making classes prior to this one.  Suggested tools: Set of large coarse files.  The Harbor Freight Tools: 12 inch heavy Duty File Set, 4pc, ($12) is perfect.  If you don’t have these, we’ll supply them. Suggested Reading: The Skills of a Blacksmith, Vol 1, by Mark Aspery, 139 – 148. This class will run from 9 AM - 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Spring Fuller & Candlestick

    $100.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: September 21, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are able to offer these CBA Level II skill-based workshops at a reduced price of $100. If you are interested in getting CBA Level certification and have not yet started, you can start with the Blacksmithing Fundamentals workshop. However, this is a great class for anyone interested in improving their skills. Imagine taking a solid bar and, with a few bends, creating something truly complex. The spring swage is used to make isolated designs in material. They can be round, square, or as complex as you wish. We will be using this fuller in a later class to help make the leafing hammer head. This class will go over how to calculate material for the projects you design, allowing for changes in length with changes in thickness, using mandrels to attain specified diameters, and a host of other useful information. We will then fire up the forges and should have no problem completing the project. We are only using ½ inch round material so great strength and endurance are not required.  There are no prerequisites other than the Discovery day. So if you are ready for the next step in your exploration of blacksmithing sign up to have some fun.  Suggested Reading: The Skills of a Blacksmith, Vol 2, by Mark Aspery, p13 This class runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm with a one hour break for lunch. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

Skill Level: Seasoned beginner and up.
This workshop is for the Frontier Belt Knife only.  If you'd like to make your own custom leather sheath, you can sign up here. Please note: This class takes place over four consecutive morning/afternoon classes.

    Friday 10/11/24 through Monday (Federal Holiday) 10/14/24 from 9:00am - 5:00pm

    Students must attend all sessions.

Whether you're horseback riding up in the rugged Yukon or the foothills of the Sierras, you'll want to make sure you have this Bowie belt knife by your side. Nothing says adventure and exploration like this extensive knife course to bring your skill set on par with blacksmiths from Early America. If you are a serious survivalist, camper, outdoorsman, or into bushcraft, then this class is tailor made for you. Take it with you wherever you decide to go and know you have a piece forged by you that can stand up to the rigors of untamed nature.

Come to Adam’s Forge to make your own knife inspired by those the pioneer hunters in early America would have carried alongside them into the unknown wilderness. Over this four-day workshop, students will forge out their own knives.

Students should be familiar with blade forging processes and have prior prerequisites met to get the most out of this class. Attention to detail on hand hammer techniques to end with a knife that is as close as we can get it to final dimensions is the name of the game.

These workshops are 8 hours long with an hour meal break.

Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Skeleton Bottle Opener

    $210.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Date: October 20, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 1 PM Location: Adam's Forge

Today we will make a ghoulish tool for the kitchen or any party. We’ll forge this from mild steel and apply a wax finish.

The project starts by drawing out the steel as you did in the Discovery Day Class. This taper will be bent around and back to create a bottle opener.

Then the fun begins as we form the skeleton. We start by using a guillotine tool (how appropriate) to form the neck and waist. Then we work on the face and chest.  You’ll have plenty of opportunity to make it your own.

Once formed, a wax finish is applied to protect the steel from kitchen abuse.

Much fun to be had by all and you will have a tool that you’ll definitely want to make again and again, as gifts for all your friends.

Skills learned: Tapers, bending over the horn, using tooling for decoration, and finishing.

Join us for a refreshing workshop centered around used, found, vintage, and salvaged materials. The focus of this class is not around finishing a project, but methods and best practices when using found materials. From old tools to rebar and leaf springs, it's all useful and begging to be turned into something new. Turn that old pipe wrench in your garage into an interesting new knife that will be a great talking piece! Reforge some of that leaf spring that you have laying around into a new hot punching set for your next blacksmithing project! The possibilities will surprise you and the skills you take away from this workshop will be useful in many different blade or tool forging applications.

In this workshop we will discuss safety issues that must be taken into consideration with any steel that is old or used as well as heat treatment of steels that are not known to us. We will then demonstrate safe preparation of our steel prior to forging. This will be followed by a hot forging demonstration on bringing an old tool to life to become a working tool.

This workshop will be taught with an emphasis on blades but we also encourage participants to explore other types of tooling and can guide those that wish to make tools. This class is best for beginner to seasoned smiths that want to try to expand their materials knowledge, heat treatment, and creativity.

Participants are encouraged to bring in tools and found materials if they wish, however they are not required as we will also provide plenty for students to pick and choose from.

Class runs from 9am - 3pm with a one hour meal break. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

The Letter Opener workshop is perfect as either an introductory or a follow-up course, as it introduces techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects. You’ll learn how to work with slightly larger stock, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You’ll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade, you’ll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. Don’t be afraid if that sounds like a lot; we’ll be there every step of the way to make sure you master all the skills you need.

Malay Parang Chopper with Ben Abbott

    $800.00
Date: August 12 & 13, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Ben Abbott Please note: This workshop takes place over two consecutive days.

Skill Level: Intermediate and up.  This workshop is suited to the smith who has stamina, confidence and experience with bladesmithing.

You’ve watched Ben Abbott triumph undefeated on Forged in Fire. You’ve worked on your hammer control and perhaps practiced forging blades yourself. Now sign up for the ultimate culmination of the two. This is your chance to learn from Ben himself and forge your own Malay Parang Chopper under his tutelage.

This small machete from Malaysia is an indispensable tool for yard work, bushcraft and camping applications.  Big enough to chop and clear brush but lean enough to slice and cut food.  Over the course of two days, we will forge and grind the blade, and attach the full-tang handle, working closely with Ben. Go home with your new tool, new knowledge and experience that will raise your work to a new level.

Please note: the first week that registration for this workshop is open, spots may only be purchased by members. If you find you are unable to register, please check back after that first week has passed, or consider becoming a member of Adam’s Forge. All proceeds go towards supporting our amazing organization, and membership will bring you exclusive events and opportunities, along with a community of other blacksmiths!
