    This socket knife was inspired by tribal knives around the world that use the socket construction in utilitarian blades. From billhooks to machetes and spears, this style of joining the metal working end to the wood shaft or handle makes for a very strong and secure fit.

    Students can expect to finish one knife and will be introduced to different variations on the additions to the socket i.e.: wood shafts, cord or rattan wrapping.  We’ll be teaching these variations in future blade clinics.

    This class is suitable for the student who has bladesmithing experience and would like to strengthen their hand-forging skill set. In this class, we’ll cover blade design with an emphasis on forging to dimension along with grinding and sharpening.  We’ll also teach the basics of heat treatment at the forge and how to achieve a rudimentary annealing, normalization, quench, and temper to produce a usable working blade.

    With these skills, you’ll be able to heat treat your blades and tools in your home forge, if you’re lucky enough to have one!  And once you’ve mastered the socket handle, you’ll be able to use it in countless other applications from garden tools to sculpture or furniture.

    Prerequisites: Discovery Letter Opener plus at least one additional blade class.  Stamina and moderate strength will be required.

    Iron Age Knife

    Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Date: March 25, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Dossain Valencia will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this class, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps!     Discovery Bottle Opener Class

This class teaches techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects.  You'll learn how to work with slightly larger stock, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You'll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the handle, you'll learn about shaping a square rod into an octagon, or if you prefer, a round, tapered bar.  Finally, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your bottle opener.     Celtic Trivet

    Date: March 12, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Leif Bennett This beautiful piece will literally elevate your dining experience!  A classic tripod design makes this trivet both stable and strong.  In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Leif Bennett will demonstrate the use of various specialized blacksmithing tools with which you’ll create traditional mortise and tenon joints.  With either a guillotine tool or a square-edged spring fuller, you’ll create tenons on each of the three pieces.  You’ll also be using a round punch to hot punch the mortise holes, and finally the monkey tool brings it all together. This trivet can be made with feet to sit on a table, or with pointed ends to sit in an open fire. This project is one of our Tools and Techniques series and successful students will meet the mortise and tenon requirement for CBA Level I certification.  If you've already made a Monkey Tool and/or a round punch, feel free to bring them along and put them to use! Prerequisite: Discovery Class or the Letter Opener Class.  This class is most suitable for the advancing student with an interest in building skills and technique.  While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken several project classes or workshops with us and/or spent time in Open Forge before starting this project are more successful and get more out of this class.

    Cheese Slicer

    Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: March 11, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke In this class we'll make tools for the kitchen or any party. These wired cheese slicers come in both a "Handled" and “C” form. We'll forge them from mild steel and apply a wax finish. Then we will string it with a fine stainless-steel wire so you can slice through any cheese you can find. We start by drawing out the steel as you did in the Discovery Day Class. Then we'll bend and twist the handle, followed by forming it into a comfortable shape. Finally, we will review the different styles of the arms and you will choose the depth and width which best fits the blocks of cheese you plan to slice. Once the shaping of the slicer is completed, a wax finish is applied to protect the steel from kitchen abuse. Finally, a stainless-steel wire will be attached and tensioned appropriately to slice your cheese. After you finish the handled Cheese Slicer, we'll demonstrate how to make a "C" form slicer. You'll then be able to make that version using what you've learned in the class. Much fun to be had by all and you will have some unique tools you will definitely want to make again and again as gifts for all your friends. Skills learned: Tapers, twisting, bending over the horn, and finishing. Student fee of $190 includes the material for both cheese slicers. This class runs from 9 AM-3 PM, with a one-hour break for lunch.     Blacksmith Knife

    In this class students will make the classic “Blacksmith’s Knife” using traditional blacksmithing techniques. We will be using high carbon tool steel, the classic material for knives, and transforming it into a versatile knife with an integral handle. This knife can be used for everything from slicing cheese and fruit, to opening a package, to making life easier on your next camping trip. Material selection, design, layout, forging & grinding techniques and heat treating will be covered.
    Successful completion of this class is needed to advance to the Bladesmithing II Program.
    Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery class.  Skill level: Beginner with some blacksmithing experience recommended. Students should have some experience with standard blacksmithing operations as well as blade forging.
    Class runs from 9am - 3pm with a one hour meal break.     Discovery Chopsticks Class

    Date: February 14, 2023 Time: 6 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Valentine's Day!  Bring your sweetheart and make some magic in the forge! Here's our newest Discovery class and one for those more experienced students who want to build on their skills too.  While this project is a simple one, it’s also one that invites improvisation and experimentation.  Using 1/4”  mild steel bar, our instructor will demonstrate tapering the stock while checking as you go to create a tool that balances in your hand while in use. They’ll show several different design options, from various twists to different punches you can use for texture as well as different types of finials.  Then you’ll move on to the little chopstick rests.  Here, you can really let your imagination lead the way!  From traditionally simple and elegant shapes to wild and whacky and everything in between, you’ll be free to create your own custom set, or maybe more if you’re swift. These also make great hair pins and gifts too! Prerequisite: None.  This is an introductory class.  The class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced smiths. They will be here for two days, the first for a CBA Instructors’ Training, the second for a hands-on class for any of our students. Mark Aspery wrote the book on blacksmithing. Literally.  Actually, he wrote three books specifically for those learning blacksmithing. Each volume offers concise step-by-step descriptions and photographs that take the smith from developing the tooling through the completed joinery project. Mark is a certified journeyman smith with the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, a United Kingdom guild founded in London in 1324. He is also a certified Farrier with the American Farriers Association. Victoria Ritter is the Treasurer of the California Blacksmith Association and heads up the education department. She teaches the CBA curriculum in northern California. These are two very active and excellent teachers. Both Mark and Victoria have contributed to the excellent CBA video tutorials that are available to members on YouTube. In this class, the focus will be on forging to dimension. This is an essential skill for any metalsmith who wants to take an idea and turn it into something tangible, precise, and possibly even functional! This class is guaranteed to expand your understanding and fortify your confidence.     Don't miss your chance to take a class of a lifetime with Nick Rossi as you forge a hunting knife with a hot-fitted bolster. Valuable instruction on blade forging, grinding, heat treating, tempering, handle fit up, as well as all sorts of neat tips and tricks from an accredited ABS Master Bladesmith will be covered. Forging to the final dimension will be stressed as well as hammer control to elevate the student’s skill at the anvil and ensure that they get the most out of each hammer blow. This is your chance to learn from an experienced knifemaker from New England who has been teaching bladesmithing for almost two decades and carries with him a serious passion for not only bladesmithing, but blacksmithing as well.

    Nick’s interest in metalworking began with a boyhood fascination with knives and swords. At the age of 15 he started working at one of the state of Maine’s largest cutlery shops and was introduced to the world of custom knifemaking by local craftspeople. With the combination of books, advice and seminars, Nick developed his skills as a bladesmith and began selling his work under the “Rossi Knives” name. Nick’s work is most influenced by Japanese, Southeast Asian and Scandinavian design as well as literature, fine art and nature. Nick is a certified  Master Bladesmith in the American Bladesmith Society, a member of the Maine Craft Guild, the Maine Craft Association, the Portland based Metals Collective and a member of the New England Bladesmith Guild. Nick teaches workshops and gives demonstrations all over the country.

    Students can expect to leave the class with a unique handmade hunting knife.

    Discovery BBQ Tool Class

    Prerequisite: None. This is the first class to take. Date: February 19, 2023 Time: 9 AM  - 1 PM Location: Adam's Forge Start Smithing! The Ancient DIY Craft. Not sure what blacksmithing is or if you’re really interested? This class is for you! Come watch a demonstration and then give it a try in the forge with the help of one of our intrepid instructors. The pre-industrial art of blacksmithing has existed since the ancient times - copper making at high-temperature dates as far back as 5,000 BCE! Projects are simple and will give you a taste of what hot forging is about. In this 4 hour class you'll get an introduction to our forge and tools, learn how to work safely, and learn the fundamental techniques of blacksmithing. And you'll come home with a useful item that you forged on your own! Come discover blacksmithing for yourself! SAFETY NOTES: Metalworking involves a certain amount of inherent risk. Many of the tools and techniques used at Adam’s Forge are capable of causing injury. Tools can burn, cut, and abrade. These are merely examples and not a complete list of dangers. If we are all aware and use safe practices we can minimize those dangers, hence the need for a safety policy. Each smith is responsible for their own safety as well as the safety of others nearby. Participants must have instructor clearance before they use any tool. The minimum age to register for this class is 12 years old. All students between the ages of 12 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult while at the Forge. HYDRATION: If you’re not sweating you’re probably not doing it right. Please bring something non-alcoholic to drink. Water works perfectly! PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COTTON, WOOL, or LEATHER): Nonflammable material is REQUIRED at all times. Tee shirts and jeans are perfect. FOOTWEAR (LEATHER, COTTON): Nonflammable and with the toes covered to protect the feet from the constant production of hot and sharp metal fragments which rain down on the feet constantly is REQUIRED at all times. A steel toe is optional and provides protection against a dropped hammer or work piece. Boots, with the pants outside the boot top will prevent the hot and sharp metal fragments from getting in and burning your feet. Tools and equipment are provided without extra charge. Eye protection is mandatory. Please bring your own safety glasses, or we can provide a new unused pair at no additional cost. Gloves are optional. We recommend that you bring a pair in case you have trouble getting hot pieces in and out of the forge. If you decide you need a pair on the day of your class you can purchase them from Adam's Forge for $7.00.     Paring Knife

    Date: February 25, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Kent Lulewich Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery Class

    Join us to create a paring knife to use in the kitchen or take on your next picnic.   This is a high carbon steel knife made from O1 steel.

    We start by creating the handle section that you can size to fit your hand perfectly. Then the blade is forged and heat-treated. Lastly, we will grind it to the level of sharpness you desire.

    The handle will be cord wrapped for both comfort and durability. We will discuss other handle options you can try on your own.

    While we will not have time in this class to make a sheath, we will show you examples so you can do this on your own.

    You will leave with a complete knife, ready to use.

    Tools: Students do not need to bring tools; we have everything that you will need. However, if you happen to have the following, please bring them so that you have the opportunity to use your own!

    Iron Age Cutlery

    Date: February 18, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Leif Bennett Students should have the experience or motivation to deal with the challenge of moving metal to very specific dimension, as well at the challenge of holding difficult shapes while striking them.  Today we will make a small (about 4 inches total length) knife and "fork" no person in the Iron Age would want to be without. This is this perfect first knife for those with little blacksmithing experience and also a great project for those with more experience.  We will be making the knife of mild steel yet hardening it in a secret Viking way which will allow for a razor edge. Once the knife is done we move on to that essential eating tool – the one pronged Spisepind. Together, you will have a cutlery set the envy of all your fellow Norsemen and Norsewomen!
