    Discovery Class

    $125.00
Prerequisite: None. This is the first class to take. Date:December 8, 2021 Time: 6 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Start Smithing! The Ancient DIY Craft. Not sure what blacksmithing is or if you’re really interested? This class is for you! Come watch a demonstration and then give it a try in the forge with the help of one of our intrepid instructors. The pre-industrial art of blacksmithing has existed since the ancient times - copper making at high-temperature dates as far back as 5,000 BCE! Projects are simple and will give you a taste of what hot forging is about. In this 4 hour class you'll get an introduction to our forge and tools, learn how to work safely, and learn the fundamental techniques of blacksmithing. And you'll come home with a useful item that you forged on your own! Come discover blacksmithing for yourself! SAFETY NOTES: Metalworking involves a certain amount of inherent risk. Many of the tools and techniques used at Adam’s Forge are capable of causing injury. Tools can burn, cut, and abrade. These are merely examples and not a complete list of dangers. If we are all aware and use safe practices we can minimize those dangers, hence the need for a safety policy. Each smith is responsible for their own safety as well as the safety of others nearby. Participants must have instructor clearance before they use any tool. The minimum age to register for this class is 12 years old. All students between the ages of 12 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult while at the Forge. HYDRATION: If you’re not sweating you’re probably not doing it right. Please bring something non-alcoholic to drink. Water works perfectly! PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COTTON, WOOL, or LEATHER): Nonflammable material is REQUIRED at all times. Tee shirts and jeans are perfect. FOOTWEAR (LEATHER, COTTON): Nonflammable and with the toes covered to protect the feet from the constant production of hot and sharp metal fragments which rain down on the feet constantly is REQUIRED at all times. A steel toe is optional and provides protection against a dropped hammer or work piece. Boots, with the pants outside the boot top will prevent the hot and sharp metal fragments from getting in and burning your feet. Tools and equipment are provided without extra charge. Eye protection is mandatory. Please bring your own safety glasses, or we can provide a new unused pair at no additional cost. Gloves are optional. We recommend that you bring a pair in case you have trouble getting hot pieces in and out of the forge. If you decide you need a pair on the day of your class you can purchase them from Adam's Forge for $5.00.
  • Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: January 2, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge This is another fun class in which you can make something both useful and beautiful for yourself or as a gift. Forging steel tubing opens lots of possibilities in both form and function.  It’s an example of the wonderful things that are possible when you use traditional smithing on modern industrial steel. Skills utilized in this class include using the guillotine tool to neck down and shrink the tubing, using the horn of the anvil to shape and flare the candle cup, cutting the material with a hacksaw, twisting in the vise and using different hammers to create texture. The instructor will demonstrate various different techniques and then you'll be free to create your own unique piece.  This is a class that has something to offer everyone from beginners to more advanced students.

    Heart Hook

    $150.00
Date: December 12, 2021 Time: 9 AM - 1 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this fun class, students will forge a steel bar into a heart shaped wall hook under the guidance of Adam’s Forge instructor John Drayer. In addition to making something both functional and beautiful, students will have a chance to refine and strengthen their forging skills, including:
    • Using a chisel to hot-cut the steel.
    • Learning the use of a ‘convenience’ bend to isolate the ends of the heart for tapering and scrolling
    • Creating decorative elements such as twists
    • Using the horn of the anvil to turn both the hook and the heart lobes
    • Hot punching or drilling the holes for attaching the hook to a surface
If you’ve had a chance to make your own hot cut or cold chisel, this is the perfect opportunity to use it! Students will have the option of punching or drilling a hole into their piece for a screw with the drill press. They can finish their piece with a wire wheel or use a finishing wax. This wall hook is a simple and attractive piece and John will explain how you can incorporate these design elements into your own projects using the concepts taught in class.  It’s a perfect gift to make for friends and family that allows the continuation of basic blacksmithing techniques. This is an opportunity to get artistic with metal and add a unique touch to home décor! This class is specifically designed for the beginning smith with just Discovery or a couple of classes under their belt who wishes to build on their skill set.  Prerequisite is any Discovery class. This class runs for 4 hours.

    Iron Age Knife

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Date: January 15, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Will Larranaga will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this class, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps!
