Malay Parang Chopper with Ben Abbott

    $800.00
Date: August 12 & 13, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Ben Abbott Please note: This workshop takes place over two consecutive days.

Skill Level: Intermediate and up.  This workshop is suited to the smith who has stamina, confidence and experience with bladesmithing.

You’ve watched Ben Abbott triumph undefeated on Forged in Fire. You’ve worked on your hammer control and perhaps practiced forging blades yourself. Now sign up for the ultimate culmination of the two. This is your chance to learn from Ben himself and forge your own Malay Parang Chopper under his tutelage.

This small machete from Malaysia is an indispensable tool for yard work, bushcraft and camping applications.  Big enough to chop and clear brush but lean enough to slice and cut food.  Over the course of two days, we will forge and grind the blade, and attach the full-tang handle, working closely with Ben. Go home with your new tool, new knowledge and experience that will raise your work to a new level.

Please note: the first week that registration for this workshop is open, spots may only be purchased by members. If you find you are unable to register, please check back after that first week has passed, or consider becoming a member of Adam’s Forge. All proceeds go towards supporting our amazing organization, and membership will bring you exclusive events and opportunities, along with a community of other blacksmiths!

Join us at Adam’s Forge for a night of excitement and hot iron as we welcome Forged in Fire’s nine-time champion and judge Ben Abbott! Watch how it’s really done as Ben hand forges a Celtic ring knife. Bring your friends and family for an unforgettable evening that will leave you inspired for the next time you come back to the forge.

The Celtic ring knife was a symbol of an individual’s freedom in medieval Europe among the Celtic people. Used as a personal tool or back-up weapon, these knives were very important in iron age cultures.

    Keyhole Spatula

    $190.00
Date: July 20, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Becky Schimpff Prerequisite: Any Discovery workshop plus 2-3 project workshops.  The more experienced smith will get more out of this workshop. Suggested Skill Level: Seasoned Beginner and up

Learn to forge a keyhole spatula in this fun class taught by Becky Schimpff. The keyhole spatula is a traditional shape that was used historically for fireplace cooking, with at least one spatula in every kitchen. Come forge your own! We promise it will be a great addition to your own kitchen, bbq or camp set-up.

Forging a keyhole shape presents a unique challenge: how do you get the metal to move into the desired shape with your hammer and anvil? In this class, Becky will introduce the concept of creating a pre-shape that allows us to isolate and then manipulate the bar to create the desired outcome, in this case a keyhole shape. This is an important concept in blacksmithing and understanding the concepts will help you as you approach your own projects.

Once set up with a pre-shape, Becky will demonstrate how to spread the bar using the peen of your hammer. This is an excellent exercise in hammer control, and we'll spend some time looking at hammer blows and how your hammer blow impacts your results.

Once the spatula is formed, Becky will shift to handle design. She'll show how to approach the handle and design considerations. Ultimately this part of the project is up to you, so bring your ideas and creativity!

Lastly, we'll put on a food safe finish so your spatula will be ready to go to work.

There is lots of learning built into this project and the skills you learn will definitely improve your blacksmithing repertoire. And you'll get to come home with a super rad spatula!

Becky is passionate about blacksmithing education; she is currently ABANA Education Chair and a member of the CBA Education Committee. She wrote a how-to on the keyhole spatula for the California Blacksmith Magazine and her article is currently available in the complementary version of the magazine on the CBA website. Check it out here - www.calsmith.org.

Class runs from 9am - 3pm with a one hour meal break.

Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Iron Age Knife

    $190.00
Click here to see all Knife workshop dates and times Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Suggested skill level: Beginner and up Date: August 10, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Dossain Valencia In this workshop, Adam’s Forge instructor Dossain Valencia will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this workshop, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps!
