    Black Cat Bottle Opener

    $165.00
Date: October 6, 2022 Time: 6 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Adam's Forge instructor Dossain Valencia gives a feline slant to the punch and drift bottle opener.  In this class, you'll use a slot punch to pierce steel, then drive drifts through the hole to progressively enlarge the opening before shaping it on the horn of the anvil. In this case we will be using these techniques to create a bottle opener, but they are essential skills for a blacksmith to understand and master in order to create additional projects like hammer heads, axe eyes, and a myriad of other projects from creating tooling to artistic endeavors. In this class we will cover skills like... Marking steel to ensure you punch in the intended location. How to punch and pierce steel efficiently without damaging tools Using progressively larger drifts to widen the slot to hole shape, then enlarge the hole to the desired size Forging on the horn to chamfer internal and external corners Using a handled ball punch and a triangular fuller Creating curves in the overall shape to make it more ergonomic This is a fun class that will allow you practice these essential blacksmithing skills and walk away with a handsome piece and the skills to make many more. Prerequisite: Any Discovery or Letter Opener Class. This class is for the experienced student. Students should be confident in hammer control and basic forging skills. This is NOT a class for beginners.

    Celtic Trivet

    $190.00
Date: October 8, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Leif Bennett This beautiful piece will literally elevate your dining experience!  A classic tripod design makes this trivet both stable and strong.  In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Leif Bennett will demonstrate the use of various specialized blacksmithing tools with which you’ll create traditional mortise and tenon joints.  With either a guillotine tool or a square-edged spring fuller, you’ll create tenons on each of the three pieces.  You’ll also be using a round punch to hot punch the mortise holes, and finally the monkey tool brings it all together. This trivet can be made with feet to sit on a table, or with pointed ends to sit in an open fire. This project is one of our Tools and Techniques series and successful students will meet the mortise and tenon requirement for CBA Level I certification.  If you've already made a Monkey Tool and/or a round punch, feel free to bring them along and put them to use! Prerequisite: Discovery Class or the Letter Opener Class.  This class is most suitable for the advancing student with an interest in building skills and technique.  While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken several project classes or workshops with us and/or spent time in Open Forge before starting this project are more successful and get more out of this class.

    Integral Bolster Paring/Steak Knife

    $535.00
Date: October 9, 16, 23, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge Fee: $535 Please note: This class takes place over three consecutive Sunday morning/afternoon/evening classes.

    Day 1: 10/9/22: 9am – 5pm with a 1-hour meal break

    Day 2: 10/16/22: 9am – 5pm with a 1-hour meal break

    Day 3: 10/23/22: 9am – 5pm with a 1-hour meal break

    Students must attend all sessions.

This elegant knife will further refine the smith’s skills with the introduction of an integral bolster.  Not only is the bolster a beautiful detail, but it also serves as a strong transition element from the slender blade to the thicker handle, pleasing to both the eye and the hand.

On day one, we’ll cover design considerations, forging techniques, use of the guillotine tool, filing and grinding as well as heat treating.  We’ll start with a single piece of ½ inch round, O1 steel and will be emphasizing precision forging with close attention to temperatures.  When the blades are forged to dimension, we’ll do the rough grinding and prepare them for the normalization and annealing cycles.

On day two, we’ll drill the tangs, refine the bolster design if desired, rough-out the scales and liners, cut the pins and finish the blade grinding before getting them ready for the final heat treating.

On day three, we’ll do the final fit-up and gluing of the scales, liners and pins, finish polishing and sanding and end with a discussion of sealing options.

Successful students can expect to complete one 4-to-6-inch paring or steak knife.

Prerequisites: Letter Opener Discovery plus Introduction to Bladesmithing-Full tang Utility Knife or 2 other blade classes.  Exceptions are subject to administrative approval.
