    Botanical Forms

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: June 30, 2024 Time: 2 PM - 6 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class we will sculpt steel with hammer, fullers and anvil to forge organic leaf and plant forms. The leaf motif has always been used to add visual interest to forged pieces from architectural work to jewelry and everything in between. Once you learn these techniques you can add leaves to almost all your projects. In this class we will demonstrate a variety of different leaf and foliage forms. They  can be made to look very realistic or representational depending on your preference.  This is a fun class in which you will get to exercise your creative license and let your imagination run free. Here’s a list of some of the skills you will learn in this class... Forging short tapers Isolating material with half faced blows to forge the leaf pre-form Drawing out stem material and turning it from square to round Using the pein and/or fullers to spread metal directionally and suggest vein texture Fold forming Light upsetting and drastic spreading to create the ginkgo leaf This class is a great way to practice your hammer accuracy and learn how to pre-form the steel to create the shapes you want to materialize. Think of it as a class to learn and practice making leaves that will adorn your future projects. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Chasing and Repoussé

    $298.00
Date: July 20 & 21, 2024 Time: 10 AM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge This is an introductory class; no prerequisite is required. Suggested skill level: Beginner through advanced Please note: This class takes place both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am - 4:00pm Instructor: Heather McLarty Students must attend both sessions. Experience transforming flat sheet metal into three dimensional sculpture using the techniques of repoussé and chasing. These techniques have been used for centuries in many cultures to express the ideas of makers, from jewelry, sword fittings and armor to the Statue of Liberty!   Students are encouraged to design their image and get input from the instructor beforehand. Your sketch should fit inside a 3 or 4 inch square.  Designs may be representational or abstract. We will start with an explanation of the various approaches and talk about design. After a bit of demonstration each student will design and execute their work in sheet copper. We will use pitch in part of the process. There are so many options, come try it for yourself! The fee for the class includes copper sheet. Pitch, pitch bowls and tooling will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring any tooling of their own (such as chasing hammers) but it is not necessary. Heat sources such as heat guns and plumber’s torches will be shared. Honesuki Style Knife

    $600.00
Date: May 25, 26 & 27 2024 Time:  9AM - 5PM Location: Adam's Forge Skill Level: Seasoned Beginner Prerequisites: Letter Opener Discovery plus Introduction to Bladesmithing or 2-3 of our blade classes. Please note: This workshop takes place over three consecutive days. Each day starts at 9:00am and ends at 5:00pm with an hour meal break. Students must attend all sessions.

Fresh from Two Fish Cutlery comes Tom Pricone’s newest interpretation of a culinary classic, the Honesuki.  This Japanese boning knife is popular among chefs and home cooks thanks to its nimble geometry and very fine edge.  It’s also versatile enough to use for filleting fish, slicing meat, and dicing veggies.

At 6-3/4 inches, this is smaller than a chef’s knife, yet the perfect size and shape for most food prep.

In keeping with our overall approach to blade smithing, the emphasis in this workshop will be on forged to finish blades with minimal stock removal necessary. The impact of design choices on overall functionality, balance, wrist, and hand fatigue will also be explored.  From forging to heat treating, grinding, polishing, handle construction and fit-up, students will have clear instruction and expert assistance each step of the way.

Rugged, refined, respected.  This cutlery exemplifies functional, elegant beauty.  If you’re serious about making knives, this class is not to be missed!

Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Dossain Valencia Prerequisites: Any Discovery workshop plus a Power Hammer Safety Workshop.  Previous experience with forge welding is recommended. Suggested Skill Level: Seasoned beginner and up. Participants should have solid blacksmithing skills and be confident using hand tools before moving to the power hammer. In this workshop, Adam's Forge lead instructor Dossain Valencia will guide you in making a pattern-welded Damascus billet using contrasting high carbon steels.  You'll gain instruction in preparing the billets, forge welding, and working with the power hammers & hydraulic press to draw them out.  The process will be repeated several times to increase the number of layers.  Finally, preliminary etching to reveal the pattern will be addressed, followed by a discussion of possible uses as well as tips on working with Damascus for future projects. This workshop will run for 8 hours on day 1 and 6 hours on day 2 with an hour meal break. Please note: the first week that registration for this workshop is open, spots may only be purchased by members. If you find you are unable to register, please check back after that first week has passed, or consider becoming a member of Adam’s Forge. All proceeds go towards supporting our amazing organization, and membership will bring you exclusive events and opportunities, along with a community of other blacksmiths!

Date: June 16, 2024 Suggested Skill Level: Seasoned Beginner Time: 9 AM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Kent Lulewich Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery Class

The Kiridashi is the original Japanese utility knife that has historically been used by Samurai and peasants alike.  It’s both light and strong, suitable for a variety of uses.  If you’ve taken the Letter Opener Discovery class, this is a perfect follow up project to build your bladesmithing skills.

Here, you’ll practice precision forging, learn some of the important considerations in blade design and have a chance to try different texturing methods.  This blade is made from tool steel, so you’ll be heat treating, grinding, polishing and hand sharpening as well.

This class runs from 9:00am – 4:00pm with an hour meal break.
