    Botanical Forms

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: June 30, 2024 Time: 2 PM - 6 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class we will sculpt steel with hammer, fullers and anvil to forge organic leaf and plant forms. The leaf motif has always been used to add visual interest to forged pieces from architectural work to jewelry and everything in between. Once you learn these techniques you can add leaves to almost all your projects. In this class we will demonstrate a variety of different leaf and foliage forms. They  can be made to look very realistic or representational depending on your preference.  This is a fun class in which you will get to exercise your creative license and let your imagination run free. Here’s a list of some of the skills you will learn in this class... Forging short tapers Isolating material with half faced blows to forge the leaf pre-form Drawing out stem material and turning it from square to round Using the pein and/or fullers to spread metal directionally and suggest vein texture Fold forming Light upsetting and drastic spreading to create the ginkgo leaf This class is a great way to practice your hammer accuracy and learn how to pre-form the steel to create the shapes you want to materialize. Think of it as a class to learn and practice making leaves that will adorn your future projects. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Chasing and Repoussé

    $298.00
Date: July 20 & 21, 2024 Time: 10 AM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge This is an introductory class; no prerequisite is required. Suggested skill level: Beginner through advanced Please note: This class takes place both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am - 4:00pm Instructor: Heather McLarty Students must attend both sessions. Experience transforming flat sheet metal into three dimensional sculpture using the techniques of repoussé and chasing. These techniques have been used for centuries in many cultures to express the ideas of makers, from jewelry, sword fittings and armor to the Statue of Liberty!   Students are encouraged to design their image and get input from the instructor beforehand. Your sketch should fit inside a 3 or 4 inch square.  Designs may be representational or abstract. We will start with an explanation of the various approaches and talk about design. After a bit of demonstration each student will design and execute their work in sheet copper. We will use pitch in part of the process. There are so many options, come try it for yourself! The fee for the class includes copper sheet. Pitch, pitch bowls and tooling will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring any tooling of their own (such as chasing hammers) but it is not necessary. Heat sources such as heat guns and plumber’s torches will be shared. Honesuki Style Knife

    $600.00
Date: May 25, 26 & 27 2024 Time:  9AM - 5PM Location: Adam's Forge Skill Level: Seasoned Beginner Prerequisites: Letter Opener Discovery plus Introduction to Bladesmithing or 2-3 of our blade classes. Please note: This workshop takes place over three consecutive days. Each day starts at 9:00am and ends at 5:00pm with an hour meal break. Students must attend all sessions.

Fresh from Two Fish Cutlery comes Tom Pricone’s newest interpretation of a culinary classic, the Honesuki.  This Japanese boning knife is popular among chefs and home cooks thanks to its nimble geometry and very fine edge.  It’s also versatile enough to use for filleting fish, slicing meat, and dicing veggies.

At 6-3/4 inches, this is smaller than a chef’s knife, yet the perfect size and shape for most food prep.

In keeping with our overall approach to blade smithing, the emphasis in this workshop will be on forged to finish blades with minimal stock removal necessary. The impact of design choices on overall functionality, balance, wrist, and hand fatigue will also be explored.  From forging to heat treating, grinding, polishing, handle construction and fit-up, students will have clear instruction and expert assistance each step of the way.

Rugged, refined, respected.  This cutlery exemplifies functional, elegant beauty.  If you’re serious about making knives, this class is not to be missed!

Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class plus a Power Hammer Safety workshop & 2 or 3 project workshops

Suggested skill level: Intermediate and up.  Participants should have solid blacksmithing skills and be confident using hand tools before moving to the power hammer.

Join us to create some amazing BBQ tongs to impress your friends at your next cookout. This is a great project to build your power hammer skills. We’ll use it to create the taper in the handles and to flatten the spring.

At the start of the class, we’ll review power hammer safety protocols and then move on to the practical project of making your tongs.

We start by defining the junction between the jaws and the handle. Using the power hammer, we can rapidly taper the handle down for a comfortable grip. Then the power hammer will make flattening the spring section a breeze.

We’ll explore the different texturing options for the handles and the tooling required to create them. Once you have decorated the handles as desired, we will work on the tong jaws to modify them to work well for grabbing everything from an ear of corn to a tomato to a steak.

Bending the spring around to align the handles to fit your hand will allow you to get these tongs to fit you perfectly.

Lastly, we will go over the different finishing options to keep it looking great and food-safe though all the masterful cooking you are planning.

Tools: Students do not need to bring tools; we have everything that you will need.
