  • Date: August 14, 2024 Time: 4 PM - 9 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Ben Abbott

Join us at Adam’s Forge for a night of excitement and hot iron as we welcome Forged in Fire’s nine-time champion and judge Ben Abbott! Watch how it’s really done as Ben hand forges a Celtic ring knife. Bring your friends and family for an unforgettable evening that will leave you inspired for the next time you come back to the forge.

The Celtic ring knife was a symbol of an individual’s freedom in medieval Europe among the Celtic people. Used as a personal tool or back-up weapon, these knives were very important in iron age cultures.

This event runs from 4:00pm to 9:00pm.  Feel free to bring snacks if you wish. Please note: All workshops are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Spring Fuller & Candlestick

    $100.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: September 21, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are able to offer these CBA Level II skill-based workshops at a reduced price of $100. If you are interested in getting CBA Level certification and have not yet started, you can start with the Blacksmithing Fundamentals workshop. However, this is a great class for anyone interested in improving their skills. Imagine taking a solid bar and, with a few bends, creating something truly complex. The spring swage is used to make isolated designs in material. They can be round, square, or as complex as you wish. We will be using this fuller in a later class to help make the leafing hammer head. This class will go over how to calculate material for the projects you design, allowing for changes in length with changes in thickness, using mandrels to attain specified diameters, and a host of other useful information. We will then fire up the forges and should have no problem completing the project. We are only using ½ inch round material so great strength and endurance are not required.  There are no prerequisites other than the Discovery day. So if you are ready for the next step in your exploration of blacksmithing sign up to have some fun.  Suggested Reading: The Skills of a Blacksmith, Vol 2, by Mark Aspery, p13 This class runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm with a one hour break for lunch. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!
  • Date: October 26, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are able to offer these CBA Level II skill-based workshops at a reduced price of $100. If you are interested in getting CBA Level certification and have not yet started, you can start with the Blacksmithing Fundamentals workshop. However, this is a great class for anyone interested in improving their skills. In this class, students will learn to make a scrolling wrench, also known as a "dog wrench" or bending fork. This is a specialized tool used to help forge scrolls and/or make or adjust controlled bends. If you haven't noticed yet, scrolls are everywhere in ironwork. And to make the perfect bend, you'll need to know how to make just the right tool! Did you ever want to just grab the iron and push, pull, or twist it to where you wanted to go? Naturally, with red-hot steel this can be difficult. What you need is a tool specifically designed to grab the material and control it from a distance.  In this class you will learn how to forge a scrolling wrench out of mild steel. First learning to isolate and move metal in the middle of the bar to create the lower jaw of the wrench using a fullering tool. Then you move on to forging the end of the bar to a specific dimension to create the 1/2" wrench.  You'll create an end treatment for a handle. In this tool you will forge an eye by drawing out and bending the end into a circle. This allows the tool to be hung from a nail. This is the same technique you would use to make an eye on the end of a spoon or ladle and also to forge an eye bolt. Lastly, you will learn to case harden the faces of the tool.  We give you the material to make a pair of them so you will be all set in your further forging adventures. With this tool you are able to move stock at the angle and in the direction you want. They are essential for making scrolls and fitting them into position. We also use them for adjusting the handles of tongs. You will get to try them out today, if you have time, making a ribbon scroll.   Gary will be teaching both the making of tongs and many other scrolls later this year. Prerequisites: Any Discovery Class and basic knowledge of blacksmithing. You should have taken one or two other tool making classes prior to this one.  Suggested tools: Set of large coarse files.  The Harbor Freight Tools: 12 inch heavy Duty File Set, 4pc, ($12) is perfect.  If you don’t have these, we’ll supply them. Suggested Reading: The Skills of a Blacksmith, Vol 1, by Mark Aspery, 139 – 148. This class will run from 9 AM - 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Box Jaw Tongs

    $100.00
Date: November 16, 2024 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Prerequisite: Any Discovery class Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are able to offer these CBA Level II skill-based workshops at a reduced price of $100. If you are interested in getting CBA Level certification and have not yet started, you can start with the Blacksmithing Fundamentals workshop. However, this is a great class for anyone interested in improving their skills. There are few things as frustrating in blacksmithing as not being able to hold the material securely as you forge it into shape. Holding varied material for blacksmithing requires a wide variety of tongs. To buy all of the tongs you need gets quite expensive.  Unfortunately, many sizes are just not available. For about the price of a couple pairs of tongs you can learn how to make your own! In this class you will learn how to forge the jaw to the correct shape for holding any material.  You then learn to forge the boss for smooth action and how to rapidly draw out the reins.   Riveting the two parts together to create a complete set of tongs is the next step. You will learn how to measure the material you will need and forge and set a rivet rapidly and correctly. Finally, you will learn how to adjust the jaws to firmly grip the material you plan to forge.  The tongs we are making today will hold 1/4” x 1/2” stock.  These tongs can also be easily adjusted to hold the ½” square stock we will use to make upset square corners at the end of this year. I have used this same tong making technique to make tongs to hold up to 1¼” material which is about as large as you will ever forge. Whether you plan to make all your tongs from scratch or buy them elsewhere and modify them to fit, this class will teach you everything you need to know. We are only using ½ inch square material today so great strength and endurance is not required.  The textbook for this program is Mastering the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing Volume 1, page 255 by Mark Aspery. This class will run from 9 AM - 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch.

Don’t be afraid if that sounds like a lot; we’ll be there every step of the way to make sure you master all the skills you need.
