    Variations on the Split Cross

    $150.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class Date: December 11, 2021 Time: 2 PM - 6 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor:  Gary Standke Join us this Holiday season as we explore various forms of the split cross.  From the classic cross to snowflakes, to a version of the Celtic cross, which predates Christianity. Taking precut material (no heavy pounding will be needed), we will transform it completely into something special by spreading and flattening. Now your creativity can express itself. We will review how to change the shape and form of the arms by cutting, spreading, and curling. Then you apply the hammered texture of your choice with many options to choose from. We will then show how to melt a glass marble into the cross. After the forging, we will review the finishing options including brass brushing/ wax and a black finish. This class is designed so a beginner, who has only taken the discovery day, can complete it. For those of you with further experience, you can modify the cross further to make it your own.  These make great gifts! Tools:  Nothing is required for you to bring as we have all the tools needed at the school. Skills covered: Using a chisel to move metal Surface texturing Working with the horn of the anvil to change the center from a diamond to a round shape Glass work Finishing

    Straight Blade Carving Knife

    $235.00
Date: December 19, 2021  Time:  9 AM - 5 PM Location: Adam's Forge This is a project class that will satisfy both those who want to make their own tools as well as those who want to make knives.  This knife is based on the traditional Wharncliffe blade and is suitable for whittling and carving wood. Using 3/8 inch round 01 tool steel, Adam’s Forge instructor Leif Bennett will demonstrate how to forge the blade and the stick tang.  You’ll learn how to file, safely grind and heat treat the steel.  Then, while the blades are in the tempering oven, you’ll shape the handle from a single piece of hardwood.  Leif will demonstrate shaping with rasps and files and students will also have the option of using belt grinders.  The handles will be finished with hand sanding and an oil finish.  The class finishes up with making a square hole in the handle to take the tang and fixing the blade in place with two-part epoxy. As this is a small blade, it’s a great class for the aspiring bladesmith who’s made a few knives and wants to practice those skills. Skills practiced include: Forging a taper to shape the blade Isolating material using the edge of the anvil to create the tang Precise forging to dimension Gauging steel temperatures through close monitoring of the forge Heat treating high carbon steel Filing, grinding & sanding Drilling and burning a hole in wood Using epoxy   Prerequisite: The Discovery or Letter Opener class plus the Iron Age Knife class or similar experience.  This class is most appropriate for students who’ve had experience making knives and can forge to dimension. This class runs from 9:00am to 5:00pm with an hour meal break.

    Iron Age Knife

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Date: December 1, 2021 Time: 10 AM - 4 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, Adam’s Forge instructor Will Larranaga will help equip you for a Viking adventure by teaching you to make a small iron age knife.  Not only is this an attractive tool, it’s also a pleasure to make, especially for those with little blacksmithing experience.  One of the advantages of this design is that it’s a one-piece knife; you don’t have the extra work of creating and attaching a handle. This enables you to bring home a beautiful and functional finished product. In this class, you’ll practice moving metal to specific dimensions, tapering and turning the beautifully curved handle.  You’ll also gain experience in learning to hold awkward shapes while striking them.  Hint: using the right tongs helps!
