    Spring Fuller & Candlestick

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class or Letter Opener class Date: January 29, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Gary Standke Imagine taking a solid bar and, with a few bends, creating something truly complex. The spring swage is used to make isolated designs in material. They can be round, square, or as complex as you wish. We will be using this fuller in a later class to help make the leafing hammer head. This class will go over how to calculate material for the projects you design, allowing for changes in length with changes in thickness, using mandrels to attain specified diameters, and a host of other useful information. We will then fire up the forges and should have no problem completing the project. We are only using ½ inch round material so great strength and endurance are not required.  There are no prerequisites other than the Discovery day. So if you are ready for the next step in your exploration of blacksmithing sign up to have some fun.  Suggested Reading: The Skills of a Blacksmith, Vol 2, by Mark Aspery, p13 This class runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm with a one hour break for lunch.

    Round Punch

    $175.00
Date: February 26, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Leif Bennett There is more than one way to create a hole in metal. You are likely familiar with using a drill. But what if you need to create a hole without removing too much material? A round punch is the best way to punch a hole while removing the least material.  In this class students will learn to forge and heat treat a hand held round punch out of high carbon steel. Students will start by making the struck end using the same technique as with other hand tools such as the Hot Cut Chisel. Then students will create a long round taper to create the punch on the business end of the tool. Once the punch is filed and heat treated it will be ready for use. Round punches are generally used to create the rivet holes. In fact, we'll be using these punches next month in our Mortise and Tenon Class and later in the year to create the rivet holes in several projects, including a pair of tongs. Beyond creating holes, punches can be also be used to create the nose, eyes and ears when forging animals. The round punch can also be filed to make what is called a bob punch used to make the tab required to create a functional bottle opener. Once you learn how to make this basic round punch, you’ll be able to adjust the sizing and design for your own project needs.  This class is part of our fundamental blacksmithing tools and techniques series of classes.  Students may take one or more of this series of classes, and may take them in any order. The classes are based on the standards required by the California Blacksmith Association for CBA Level 1 (beginner) certification. Students interested in certification will be able to meet the CBA requirements to 1) make a round punch, and 2) heat treat a tool upon completion of this class. This class is most appropriate for the advancing smith with an interest in building skills and technique. While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken several project classes or workshops with us and/or spent time in Open Forge before starting this project are more successful and get more out of this class. All students must have taken a Discovery class with us.

    Railroad Spike Tomahawk

    $175.00
Prerequisite: Discovery Class Date: January 16, 2022 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge In this class, Adam's Forge instructor John Drayer will lead students in making a tomahawk out of a railroad spike. Yes, this class is indeed as cool as it sounds. Yes, this class is challenging. First, John will teach students how to upset the railroad spike. What is upsetting? This is the process of thickening steel and moving mass to where you want the mass to go by isolating sections of the material with heat and banging on it with a hammer. Sound fun? You bet! The idea here is to create mass at the end of the railroad spike by upsetting it into itself so that there is enough material to make the tomahawk blade. This is a really great technique and useful for lots of projects where you may need to create mass. Next, John will teach students to punch the railroad spike using a hand held slot punch to create the opening for the eye for the tomahawk. Have you ever thought about how to create a hole without losing mass? This is one of the most useful blacksmith skills! Punching a hole moves mass to the side, and practically no material is wasted. With a nicely punched hole, students will next move on to forging the tomahawk blade using the peen of their hammers. John will be discussing how to alternate between using the peen and flat face of your hammer to control where the metal will go and in what direction. Lastly, John will show students how use a mouse hawk drift to drift open the eye to the size required for the handle, how to file the edge, and how to attach the handle. Please note that this class is not appropriate for the beginning student! Students should have solid blacksmithing skills before signing up for this class. This class is appropriate for the intermediate smith comfortable working with larger size stock and hand tools. We request that students have taken at least 3-5 project classes or workshops with us or have taken the CBA program in the past or are currently enrolled in our Tools and Techniques classes to be eligible for this class. Please do not sign up for this class if you have just taken Discovery! Take some other classes first, and then come back for this one when you have more experience. If you are not sure about your experience level, contact us and we'll help figure out if this class is for you. This class runs from 9 AM - 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch.
