    Discovery Chopsticks Class

    $155.00
Date: December 8, 2022 Time: 6 PM - 10 PM Location: Adam's Forge Here's our newest Discovery class and one for those more experienced students who want to build on their skills too.  While this project is a simple one, it’s also one that invites improvisation and experimentation.  Using 1/4”  mild steel bar, our instructor will demonstrate tapering the stock while checking as you go to create a tool that balances in your hand while in use. They’ll show several different design options, from various twists to different punches you can use for texture as well as different types of finials.  Then you’ll move on to the little chopstick rests.  Here, you can really let your imagination lead the way!  From traditionally simple and elegant shapes to wild and whacky and everything in between, you’ll be free to create your own custom set, or maybe more if you’re swift. These also make great hair pins and gifts too! Prerequisite: None.  This is an introductory class.  The class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced smiths. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Forge Welded Woven Bracelet

    $165.00
Date: January 15, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 1 PM Location: Adam's Forge Are you ready to forge weld?  Up until modern times, this skill was a closely guarded secret.  In this class, you’ll take a single round bar and using some clever hot folding and forge welding, create a three-piece bracelet.  Adam’s Forge instructor Amanda Kazarian will demonstrate the forge welding, twisting and forming of the open basket weave and finally show you how to form it into a beautiful bracelet that you can custom fit to your liking. The skills learned in this class will easily translate to a wide variety of other items and uses. From hardware to handles to pure ornamentation, this basket weave is a classic design element you’ll want to have in your repertoire. This class is most appropriate for the advancing smith with an interest in building skills and technique. While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken several project classes or workshops with us and/or spent time in Open Forge before starting this project are more successful and get more out of this class.  All students must have taken a Discovery class with us. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!

    Scrolling Tongs

    $190.00
Date: January 14, 2023 Time: 9 AM - 3 PM Location: Adam's Forge Instructor: Leif Bennett In this session students will learn to forge a set of scrolling tongs. You'll learn to forge the jaws, create a joint for smooth action, draw out the reins, rivet it all together and then adjust it to your hand. Students of the CBA courses will be using the round punch forged in session 3 to punch the holes for the rivet to hold the tongs together, so bring your round punch if you made one!  Scrolling tongs are used to bend or scroll metal without marking or damaging the surface. In fact, you may have used scrolling tongs to help make the barn hook project in Discovery class! Scrolling tongs are so essential that every blacksmith has at least one pair.  This is the 7th session in our year long CBA Level 1 program.  CBA Level 1 is based on standards required by the California Blacksmith Association for Level 1 (beginner) Certification. After completing the Level 1 program, students will have the skills needed to create basic blacksmithing projects and the associated tooling. Each session in the program focuses on making one of the tools or completing one or more techniques required for certification. Each session builds on what is taught in earlier sessions, and we recommend that students commit to taking all of the sessions to get the most out of the program. Students use tools made in earlier sessions to make later projects, and then use these tools and techniques to complete the "final" for certification. Students who completed our Blacksmithing Fundamentals: Tooling I will have satisfied 5 of the requirements for CBA level I certification and this class will satisfy another requirement. We require that students take at least a Discovery Class with us prior to starting CBA Level 1. While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken at least 3-5 project classes with us before starting Level 1 are more successful and get more out of the program.  The textbook for this program is Mastering the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing Volume 1 by Mark Aspery. This class will run from 9 AM - 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch. Please note: All classes are released for member-only early registration for one week before they're available for general registration.  If you're unable to add this class to your cart, you can wait for general release or join our membership program at any time!
