Prerequisite: Discovery Class
Date: June 19, 2021
Time: 9 AM – 3 PM
Location: Adam’s Forge
In this Tools and Techniques class students will forge a fire poker. To create the poker, students will first learn to forge weld. Forge welding is required to properly make the latch on the final. It’s also a really fundamental blacksmithing skill that is applicable in many projects. In addition, students will learn to forge the fire poker to dimension based on the drawing provided. The final will also require forging to dimension. Again, this is a fundamental blacksmithing skill and can be widely applied to many future projects.
The fire poker itself is a pretty rad addition to your project line-up. It’s perfect for camping or if you have a fireplace at home. It also makes a great gift for friends or family.
This class is the 8th session in our Tools and Techniques program and is based on standards required by the California Blacksmith Association for Level 1 (beginner) Certification. After completing Tools and Techniques program, students will have the skills needed to create basic blacksmithing projects and the associated tooling.
Each session in the program focuses on making one of the tools or completing one or more techniques required for certification. Each session builds on what is taught in earlier sessions, and we recommend that students commit to taking all of the sessions to get the most out of the program. Students use tools made in earlier sessions to make later projects, and then use these tools and techniques to complete the “final” for certification.
We require that students take at least a Discovery Class with us prior to starting the Tools and Techniques program. While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken at least 3-5 project classes with us before starting the T & T classes are more successful and get more out of the program.
The textbook for this program is “Mastering the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing, Volume 1,” by Mark Aspery.
This class runs from 9 AM – 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch.
