Date: September 19, 2021
Time: 9 AM – 3 PM
Location: Adam’s Forge
Come to Adam’s Forge and make a set of decorated, fully functional tongs.
During the Covid slowdown, Mike Mumford busied himself making a series of decorated tongs that incorporate various images and motifs. We’ve included a photo of his full set of Funtastical Tongs for your viewing pleasure and Mike will bring examples of some of these for show and tell. Over the weekend of September 18th and 19th, we’ll be holding Funtastical Tongs classes in which you can learn to make two different versions of these. You can choose to take one or both classes.
In this second day of Mike Mumford’s Funtastical Tongs classes, we’ll be making the Alligator Tongs. These are a version of flat jaw tongs that are designed to grab your stock in a ferocious toothy grip. In each tong class, Mike will demonstrate using the near and far edges of the anvil to create the off-sets necessary for smooth operation of the jaws. In addition to creating the facial features, you’ll be drawing out the reins, hot punching the rivet holes and finally assembling, riveting and adjusting the grip to suit the desired stock. With these skills, you’ll be able to create specialized tongs for various needs.
The Alligator tongs were featured in an article in California Blacksmith magazine for May-June 2021.
This class runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a break for lunch.
Prerequisite: This class is most appropriate for the advancing smith with an interest in building skills and technique. While it is not required, we have found that students who have taken several project classes or workshops with us and/or spent time in Open Forge before starting this project are more successful and get more out of this class. All students must have taken a Discovery class with us.
