Prerequisite: Letter Opener Discovery class plus successful completion of Introduction to Bladesmithing or equivalent.  Exceptions are subject to administrative approval.

This class is scheduled as two consecutive sessions starting at 9 am.  Students must attend both sessions. Each session will run approximately 8 hours with an hour meal break.

This is a small, light hatchet suitable for hiking, camping and medium-duty landscape work.  In this class, we’ll cover axe design and nomenclature, tooling, punching, and drifting the eye of the axe, and forging the blade to dimension.  We’ll also learn and practice team striking.  This will be followed by rough grinding, heat treating, finish grinding, polishing and finally, fitting the handle.

This class takes place over two 8-hour days with an hour meal break.

Skill Level: Seasoned beginner
