Prerequisite: None. This is an introductory non-ferrous class.
Date: October 28, 2021 & October 29, 2021
Time: 9 AM – 1 PM
Location: Adam’s Forge
Please note: This class takes place over two separate classes.
This class is scheduled as two consecutive sessions starting at 9 am.
Students must attend both sessions. Each session will run approximately 4 hours.
In this two-day class, Adam’s Forge instructor Will Larranaga will team up with Glass Artist Cathi Milligan to guide students in the production of enameled copper bowls.
On day one, you’ll make a copper bowl from scratch. Will Larranaga will guide you through the layout, cutting and dressing the copper blanks. He’ll demonstrate sinking (forming) techniques using a variety of different methods. You’ll be introduced to the concepts of work hardening, annealing and planning your work so that the finished piece is rigid and strong. And he’ll demonstrate different tools and techniques to add texture to the work.
On day 2, we’ll take those gorgeous copper bowls you just made and add color to turn them into beautiful jewels. Enamel is finely ground glass that comes in a rainbow of colors and can be melted onto the surface of most metals. Enameling metal is one of the most effective means of adding color to your metal work.
Copper and enamel play really well together and the combination of the two materials can open up all kinds of cool design possibilities. We’ll use a kiln to melt the enamels and layer colors in stages. Expect the unexpected!
You’ll go home with a one-of-a-kind bowl you can cherish forever. And it will be shiny too!
In this class, Adam’s Forge is pleased to partner with Glass Artist Cathi Milligan. For over 28 years, she has mastered techniques such as torch working, kiln forming, mosaic, enameling and glass blowing. Cathi is also the publisher of LA Art News, a Northeast Los Angeles based online publication devoted to promoting art and culture in all of Los Angeles. She also teaches glass and jewelry classes at Otis College of Art and Design.
We’ll provide all the tools and materials you need to complete your signature piece. However, if you have your own tools, feel free to bring them.
Prerequisite: None. This is a non-ferrous introductory class.
