Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are able to offer these CBA Level II skill-based workshops at a reduced price of $100. If you are interested in getting CBA Level certification and have not yet started, you can start with the Blacksmithing Fundamentals workshop. However, this is a great class for anyone interested in improving their skills.

There are few things as frustrating in blacksmithing as not being able to hold the material securely as you forge it into shape. Holding varied material for blacksmithing requires a wide variety of tongs. To buy all of the tongs you need gets quite expensive.  Unfortunately, many sizes are just not available.

For about the price of a couple pairs of tongs you can learn how to make your own!

In this class you will learn how to forge the jaw to the correct shape for holding any material.

You then learn to forge the boss for smooth action and how to rapidly draw out the reins.

Riveting the two parts together to create a complete set of tongs is the next step. You will learn how to measure the material you will need and forge and set a rivet rapidly and correctly.

Finally, you will learn how to adjust the jaws to firmly grip the material you plan to forge.

The tongs we are making today will hold 1/4” x 1/2” stock.  These tongs can also be easily adjusted to hold the ½” square stock we will use to make upset square corners at the end of this year. I have used this same tong making technique to make tongs to hold up to 1¼” material which is about as large as you will ever forge.

Whether you plan to make all your tongs from scratch or buy them elsewhere and modify them to fit, this class will teach you everything you need to know.

We are only using ½ inch square material today so great strength and endurance is not required.

The textbook for this program is Mastering the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing Volume 1, page 255 by Mark Aspery.

This class will run from 9 AM – 3 PM, with a one hour break for lunch.
